H I S T O R Y

Ciaran was born in the slums of Dakan to parents who mostly ignored him, and despite scholarly leanings, quickly learned that such wouldn't help him on the streets. He didn't join a gang, instead becoming first a mercenary, and then a hired assassin - making enough money to satisfy his family and, eventually, move out on his own. Although at first he only handled minor gang hits, he soon found himself moving onto higher-class targets due to his agility and cunning, and his distinctive symbol (a cross-shaped pendant he had stolen from an early kill) soon became somewhat notorious in the underworld.

However, at the age of 18, he got cocky. He decided to try a truly noble target in the North - not even for a fee, just as advertisement of sorts. He first broke in just to look around and pocketed a small item as proof that he had done that much. Before he could escape to plan more, however, he was arrested for theft, his left hand branded with a single X.

The incident frightened Ciaran deeply, and he decided that leaving Dakan would be in his best interests. Thus, he set off for Faline, hitchhiking and just plain walking for weeks and weeks. Eventually he arrived, however, and set up his new life - working in a bookstore, free from the violence of his previous life.

Shortly after his arrival, he happened to literally run into a young man named Erin as he was walking down the street. After the other man had gotten over his initial embarrassment, the two struck up a conversation, and ended up bonding quickly. They agreed to meet again, and soon the two were fast friends - although Ciaran never exactly cared for Erin's brother, Dearthair. Nonetheless, the man enjoyed his conversations with Erin, telling him all about the things he had seen on the way to Faline (although he never revealed the reason he had left).

Eventually his twenty-second birthday rolled around, and Erin got him a lovely journal. Shortly after writing in it for the first time, however, his eyesight in his right eye began to deteriorate, and soon he was left half-blind. Ciaran tried to avoid connecting the incident to the birthday gift, trying to convince himself that it was just an infection, but Erin believed that it was the fault of the journal and, by connection, him - and after a while it was hard not to believe him. Nonetheless, Ciaran never blamed the younger man. After all, how could he have known?

Shortly afterwards, Dearthair confronted Ciaran about his past, having finally figured it out. Ciaran eventually admitted to it, causing Dearthair to reject the man entirely and swear to keep Erin safe from him.

A few days after this, Ciaran went to Erin's house to discover it was empty. But he had always been excellent at finding people, and so now he's busily hunting down the brothers, certain that Erin would never fully reject him.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Ciaran can come off as a bit arrogant to people - his self-assured smile very rarely fades, and although he's polite, he's also mildly condescending towards others. In addition, he lacks empathy towards most people, and has little regard towards the sanctity of life.

However, if he finds someone interesting, he can be the best of friends with them. While he always remains a bit distant, he does try to empathize with those few people he cares about, even if he's not always successful. Conversations with him are always interesting, as his travels have provided him with many stories - and if some are partially untrue, well, that just makes things more interesting. Despite his background, he can actually be rather charming when he wants to be.

The slow loss of his sight has started to humble him somewhat, and he's overly cautious about everything physical he does nowadays, to prepare himself for when his vision goes entirely. Nonetheless, he's still rather confident in his own skills, which is why he pursued Erin with so few leads to go on.

Erin is perhaps the only person he feels truly close to, and he enjoys caring for the younger man. In addition, he finds the other to be an interesting conversational partner, if a bit quiet.
